As lead guitarist in a Dutch Santana tribute band, to me the holy grail of Santana tone is the way Carlos sounded mid 70’s to begin 80’s when he was rocking the famous Yamaha SG 175-B and a SG 2000 through a Boogie Mark 1 with an Altec 417-8h series 2 speaker in it. EPIC !!
So after managing to obtain mentioned amp and speaker, I thought a Yamaha SG 2000 would help me nail this covetted sound.
But somehow I still wasn’t there and I blamed it on the pickups thinking Yamaha must have custom made Carlos’s for him back in the day.
And that would make it really hard, maybe even impossible, to find pickups that could deliver what I needed.
So I started doing online research hoping to find advice on the best pickups for Sanatana tone, and found Fabians website and his hand wound Moonflower humbuckers. BINGO !!
After installing them into my Yamaha my ” Moonflower album tone ” is as close as it will ever get considering there is only one Carlos Santana and of course an important element in his tone and sound also lies within his fingers, technique and how he pours his heart and soul into it.
So I’m still working hard on trying to play and sound like Carlos but I am extremely happy I chose D’Urbano Magnetics Moonflower pickups as they helped me make a huge leap in the right direction.

I bought a pair of Moonflowers for my Maton JB6. The originals from Maton were ear splittingly sharp and harsh and they admitted they were a bad choice. But since it’s a great guitar I looked around and decided to try these. I installed them with the existing phase switch and added and push pull volume switch to go single pole – humbucker. The improvement was incredible with a sweet full sound at last and the switches allow me to explore all types of sounds. I’m about to repair my Les Paul and will get the P90s from here as well. I’ve been very happy with these pups.

I’ve had these pick ups in my Aria pro for three years. Besides my Fab Tele, and Fab Strat, I like playing these pups turned right up, and driven hard to get tidy lead mixed with perfect harmonics thrown in. Very up front guitar. Very happy. Thanks Fab
